2 bum knees - Chase UtleyEffed up Achilles - Ryan Howard
Hurt finger - Placido Polanco
Up shit creek without a paddle - 2012 Philadelphia Phillies
Ok, ok, the season isn't over and with the Phils pitching they'll always be competitive. However, Howard won't be back anytime soon, and when he does return, how will he produce. Like always, Ruben Amaro has been lying through his teeth about injuries, and it turns out Utley is hurt, and hurt bad. 75% of the starting infield is banged up with the brittle J-Roll being the only healthy one. This could be a very long season. Consider that the Phillies fallback plans around the infield include Michael Martinez, Ty Wigginton, and Freddy Galvis. Only one of them can hit, but can't field a lick (Wiggy). The offense is looking pretty dismal, unless you consider Laynce Nix a lineup ignitor. Yeah, didn't think so.
Leftover Lefties:
The D-Train never even rolled into the Philly. Dontrelle Willis proved that the last 5 seasons haven't been a fluke, and he indeed still sucks. That leaves Joe Savery, Raul Valdes, and Jake Diekman battling for the 2nd lefty in the bullpen (should the Phils choose they need one). Diekman has logged 4 scoreless innings this spring, striking out 8. Savery- 5.1 scoreless frames with 7 K. Valdes- 6.2 IP with 8 K and a 1.35 ERA. All three have impressed and the battle will continue likely another 2 weeks.
*Bon voyage Joel Pineiro. The Phils sent him the way of Willis...released.

neither of which utley can do. ha!
Hobble is about all the Phils are capable of.
I will not proclaim the Phils' NL East dynasty over, but the ominous clouds gathering on the horizon for the past year are coming closer.
I'm very interested to see how the new look Marlins and Nats weather April. The Bravos are still the Bravos - a known quantity.

a knee..a knee..my kingdom for a knee...

If you put together all the bits of Utley, Howard, and Polanco that actually worked, you'd have one decent player. It is too early to despair.....but being from Philly, I will ignore that--I'm already there.
Michael Martinez broke his foot. This might actually be a blessing.
Too early to pee on the parade. Just as well that you're NOT a GM since the 'real' one gets to make some thoughtful decisions about what happens next. Meet you back here 162 games from now? Go Phillies!
Kristin Long- tell me exactly how I peed all over the season. I said the season isn't over and that with the Phillies pitching they'll always be competitive. Read the entire post!!!
I read it again and decided that it was even more negative the second time around. Enjoy the ride.
Utley started last season on the DL, our starting RF was Benny Fresh and we didn't have Pence.... Lets see where we are in 6 months.
This is year is going to be better than last year. Last off season opening was filled with such high expectations for me and left me hurt and bitter at the end of the season. This year I have little optimism. It will be like watching them before 07 hoping they will do well but not really believing that
I think the remaining combination of the Rotation, Pence, Vic, and Chooch can keep the Phils afloat for a month or so. If Utley isn't back by May or so though, I'll be getting antsy.
I apologize. Phillies are flawless. 162-0 they go.
