Stuff:
*Herndon threw 69 pitches yesterday, but only 27 for strikes. Yep, his unexpected string of successful outings has been brought to a screeching halt.
*I hope Chase Utley decides to start hitting again. With yesterday's 0-7, his average is now down to .263. Bleh.
*Losing 2 of 3 to the Fish is bad. It was an ugly weekend for the Phightins.
*Braves are in Philly for a 3 game set starting today. Phils better pull their heads out of their collectives asses and take care of business, because things could very get interesting otherwise.
*Question- why are the Phillies shorthanded in the bullpen? It's September, call-up some warm bodies that are on the 40-man roster (Mathieson, De Fratus, Perez, Zagurski) and use them in case of emergency or blowout (ex- yesterday's 14 inning game).

It seems that the Phillies are poised in letting the minor league teams attempt to compete in the postseason and that's why they really haven't called anyone else up yet...
They can't call up anyone up from the minors, because they are both in pennant races themselves. If they don't make it, then we could possibly see some call ups in mid-September.
In fairness to Herndon, lots of the balls were intentional walks. And why did he have to keep walking people? Because the offense could not or would not get a few key hits. And the fans were clearly Phillies fans and were clearly over the wall. And then they signaled a home run. Not helping the cause. Keep your hands OUT of the field of play! Maybe the ump made a bad call, but the fans made it all possible!
I understand the Reading and Lehigh Valley are fighting for spots in the playoffs, but they're minor league teams with the purpose of serving the parent club (Phillies). I wish them well, but some extra arms in the 'pen would be nice, so we don't have to see Herndon go so many innings or consecutive days.
And get mad at the Phans for reaching over all you want, but the bottomline is Joe West didn't just make a bad call, he broke baseball's rules by using instant replay against its intended use.
Joe West is bullshit. Part of my weekly routine is searching MLB video for "eject". This week's search yielded a video where Joe West 90 feet away throws out a manager arguing with another umpire. He's not the only one. These crew chiefs are now putting hands on players which used to be a cardinal no-no. I remember another one where a crew chief called a meeting to overrule a rookie umpire's call at 1st base. Ridiculous. From my PoV there is nothing being done to corral these guys either. In other sports leagues they wouldn't be around anymore or at least would be censured for their actions.
I still don't understand why, even in an extreme case where the ump saw the play go down at close range, this play would be ruled an out. How can that assumption be made?? Wouldn't the most obvious outcome be to consider that play unusable and redo the pitch putting Pence back at bat?
That play cannot be an out. Fan interference assumes the play is routine and the fielder would easily make it without obstruction. Hello...dude was jumping into the wall with his arm jarring against the top. That's is not routine nor automatic. Fuck Joe West.
If the fans had been Marlins fans, would it still be fan interference? Not sure of the rule here.
