Aside from a couple stinkers, the Phillies have been absolutely dominating to open the 2011 season. Now at 7-2 after the shutout victory over the Braves this afternoon, the Phils have won all 3 series this year. Their run differential is +26. That's good. Early Observations & Notes:
*So good so far for Jose Contreras, or as Manuel likes to call him, The Big Truck, in the closer's role.
*Shane Victorino had 9 base knocks in Atlanta.
*Cole Hamels is okay after all.
*Charlie Manuel likes Michael Martinez way more than me. Actually, I don't like him at all.
*Ben Francisco is hitting well enough to replace Werth, but his defense has been unsightly.
*The pitching staff has twirled 2 shutouts. Nice.
Magic number watch...

Great win, great game today. I'm OK with Michael Martinez getting a spot start here and there, kid made some nice plays in the field today - nothing spectacular just made the plays.
Everybody playing everyday is healthy, no one is nicked up. I think that's why Polly, Howard, J-Roll, and Ibanez are looking decent at the plate so far.
I'd like Mayberry to get a start in LF against a lefty in place of Raul.
The Big Truck hasn't been in a closing situation where there was no wiggle room. Let's see how he does when he can't afford to give up any runs.
Matty- I agree, but he's looked good so far. Gotta think Lidge would have found a way to blow a save by now.
Converted pitcher Joe Savery is 12-15 in the FSL (.833). Not sure what position he can play though. Likely on 1st base.
I agree with getting Ibanez some time off and seeing less of Michael Martinez. I thought Pete Orr was going to get a shot in the field too, what happened to him during the first week? Maybe Cholly likes him better off the bench?
